🧈 Butter
The melted butter isn't just for flavor—it soaks into the warm muffins, keeping them incredibly moist while helping every bit of cinnamon sugar cling to the outside. It's what gives these little treats their signature rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

🌰 Nutmeg
Just a touch of nutmeg gives these muffins that nostalgic old-fashioned donut flavor. It doesn't overpower the cinnamon but adds warmth and depth that makes everyone wonder what the secret ingredient is.

Recipe Origin
Butter-dipped cinnamon muffins have been a beloved home baking classic for decades and are often called "French Breakfast Puffs." Despite the name, they're actually an American recipe that became popular in church cookbooks and community recipe collections during the mid-1900s.

Their donut-like flavor without the hassle of frying has made them a favorite for family breakfasts, brunches, holiday mornings, and bake sales ever since.

Tips
Don't overfill the mini muffin cups—about two-thirds full gives them the perfect rounded top.
Dip the muffins while they're still warm so the butter can soak in.
Roll them generously in the cinnamon sugar immediately after the butter dip.
A small cookie scoop helps keep every muffin the same size for even baking.

Serving Suggestions
Enjoy warm with coffee or hot chocolate.
Pair with fresh berries for breakfast.
Serve alongside apple cider during the fall.
Add to a brunch buffet or holiday breakfast spread.

Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature.
For longer storage, freeze for up to 2 months. Warm for about 10–15 seconds in the microwave before serving to bring back that fresh-from-the-oven softness.

Butter-dipped Cinnamon Dreams
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 20–25 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Yield Approximately 48 mini muffins

Ingredients
Muffins
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup granulated sugar
â…” cup shortening
2 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
½ pound (2 sticks) butter, melted
1½ cups granulated sugar
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease two mini muffin pans.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg until well combined.
In the bowl of a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer), cream together the sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs and beat until fully incorporated.
Gradually add the dry ingredients and milk, alternating between the two. Begin and end with the flour mixture, mixing well after each addition until the batter is smooth.
Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, fill each muffin cup about two-thirds full. Avoid overfilling.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the muffins cool for just a minute or two before removing them from the pans.
Melt the butter in a shallow bowl. In another shallow bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon.
While the muffins are still warm, dip each one completely into the melted butter, allowing a little butter to soak into the muffin.
Immediately roll the butter-coated muffin in the cinnamon sugar until evenly coated on all sides.
Serve warm or at room temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular muffin pans instead?
Yes! You'll get about 18 standard muffins. Increase the baking time to approximately 22–28 minutes.
Can I substitute butter for the shortening?
You can, but shortening creates a softer, more tender crumb that's closer to the classic recipe.
Do these taste like donuts?
Absolutely! The combination of nutmeg, butter, and cinnamon sugar gives these muffins a flavor and texture that's very similar to cinnamon sugar cake donuts.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes. They're delicious the next day and store well in an airtight container for several days.
Can I freeze them?
Yes. Freeze after they've cooled completely. Thaw at room temperature and warm briefly before serving for the best texture.
Why should I dip them while they're warm?
Warm muffins absorb a little of the melted butter, making them extra moist while helping the cinnamon sugar stick beautifully.
