Cold-Smoked Salmon
Cold-smoked salmon provides the signature flavor of this dip. Unlike hot-smoked salmon, cold-smoked salmon maintains a silky texture and delicate smoky taste that blends beautifully with creamy ingredients. Its rich flavor means a little goes a long way, creating an impressive appetizer with minimal effort.

Fresh Dill
Dill is a classic pairing for salmon, adding a bright, herbaceous note that complements the smoky richness of the fish. Combined with fresh chives and lemon, it helps balance the richness of the cream cheese and mayonnaise while bringing freshness to every bite.

Recipe Origin
Smoked salmon spreads and dips have long been staples throughout Northern Europe and North America, particularly in regions with strong fishing traditions. Scandinavian countries have enjoyed cured and smoked salmon preparations for centuries, often pairing them with fresh herbs, dairy products, and hearty breads.

Modern smoked salmon dip evolved as a convenient party appetizer, blending traditional smoked fish flavors with cream cheese-based spreads popularized in the United States. Today's versions are commonly served at brunches, holiday gatherings, and cocktail parties, offering a sophisticated flavor profile that requires very little preparation.

Helpful Tips
Allow the cream cheese to soften fully before mixing for the smoothest texture.
Pulse the salmon carefully to maintain some texture rather than creating a puree.
Taste before adding salt, as smoked salmon and capers already contribute significant saltiness.
Prepare the dip several hours ahead of time to allow the flavors to meld together.

Serving Suggestions
Serve with bagel chips for a classic smoked salmon and bagel experience.
Pair with pita chips, crostini, rye crackers, or toasted baguette slices.
Use as a spread for sandwiches or wraps.
Spoon onto cucumber slices for a low-carb appetizer.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Stir before serving if any separation occurs. This dip is best served chilled.

⅓ cup sour cream
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives, plus extra for garnish

2 teaspoons capers, drained and coarsely chopped
Kosher salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use hot-smoked salmon instead?
Yes. Hot-smoked salmon will create a heartier texture and a more pronounced smoky flavor. Simply flake it before processing.
Can I make this dip ahead of time?
Absolutely. In fact, making it several hours ahead allows the flavors to develop and blend together even better.
What can I serve with smoked salmon dip?
Bagel chips, pita chips, crackers, cucumber slices, celery sticks, toasted baguette slices, and bell pepper strips all pair well with this dip.
Can I freeze smoked salmon dip?
Freezing is not recommended, as the dairy ingredients can separate and become grainy when thawed.
Is this dip keto-friendly?
Yes. Served with vegetables instead of chips or crackers, it can fit well into a low-carb or keto lifestyle.
