Tucked along Central Avenue, Copper & Rye has quickly made a name for itself as one of the most exciting dining destinations in the area—and after our recent visit, it’s easy to see why. Housed in the former Bruno’s building, this reimagined space blends charm, sophistication, and warmth in a way that feels both fresh and familiar. Owner Jason Beter has created something truly special here, and with Executive Chef Jared Lewis leading the kitchen, the result is a dining experience that feels thoughtful, elevated, and downright memorable. It may very well be our new favorite restaurant in Barboursville.
Barboursville itself carries a rich sense of history that adds to the experience of dining here. Founded in the early 19th century and named after James Barbour, a former governor of Virginia, the town blends small-town charm with deep historical roots. One notable landmark nearby is Barboursville Park, home to remnants of Civil War activity and scenic trails that locals and visitors alike enjoy year-round. It’s the kind of place where history quietly lingers, making the emergence of a refined, modern restaurant like Copper & Rye feel like an exciting new chapter.

"Copper & Rye is dedicated to bringing you a dining experience centered in community. Upscale modern American meets subtle Southern flair and French culinary technique for a menu that feels familiar yet elevated. Craft cocktails, fresh takes on classic dishes, and an atmosphere that encourages relaxation and time spent together. Our goal is to inspire both comfort and conversation. We are pleased to welcome you to our table."

We visited on a Saturday evening and arrived a bit early, so we slipped next door to 1861 Public House for a quick cocktail to bridge the gap. Once 5:00 PM rolled around, we made our way over for our reservation. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with genuine hospitality—a smiling host, a welcoming atmosphere, and the immediate sense that we were in for something special. We were fortunate to have Spencer as our server, and he was exceptional from start to finish. Friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without being overbearing, he guided us through the menu with thoughtful recommendations that absolutely delivered.

The restaurant itself is stunning. From the exterior’s classic brick façade and vintage-style signage to the interior’s rich wood paneling and warm lighting, Copper & Rye strikes a perfect balance between upscale elegance and relaxed comfort. Inside, the space feels intimate yet open, with beautifully set tables featuring crisp white folded napkins, polished glassware, and comfortable leather seating. The bar area draws you in with its dark wood finishes, gleaming surfaces, and inviting layout—perfect for lingering over a cocktail. The detailed ceiling work and subtle design touches throughout give the space a timeless feel, almost like stepping into a modern-day speakeasy with a refined edge.

Starters
Crab Cakes with Sriracha Aioli

The crab cakes were a fantastic way to kick off the evening. Perfectly golden on the outside, they had a delicate crisp that gave way to a tender, flaky interior packed with sweet, fresh crab. What stood out most was the balance—these weren’t overloaded with filler, allowing the natural flavor of the crab to shine through in every bite.
The sriracha aioli added just the right amount of heat and creaminess, elevating the dish without overpowering it. The subtle spice lingered pleasantly, complementing the richness of the crab cakes. It was a classic dish executed with precision and just enough flair to make it memorable.

Peach Habanero Summer Salad

This salad was a refreshing and vibrant surprise. The bib lettuce provided a crisp, delicate base, while the diced peaches brought a burst of juicy sweetness that instantly brightened the dish. The candied pecans added a satisfying crunch and a touch of caramelized richness that tied everything together beautifully.
The goat cheese crumbles introduced a creamy tanginess that balanced the sweetness, and the peach habanero vinaigrette was the real star. It delivered a gentle heat that built gradually, creating a dynamic flavor profile that danced between sweet, spicy, and savory. It felt light yet indulgent—a perfect summer-inspired starter.

Entrees
Seared Salmon with Pineapple Beurre Blanc

The seared salmon was cooked to perfection, with a beautifully crisp exterior and a moist, flaky center that melted effortlessly with each bite. The seasoning was subtle yet effective, allowing the quality of the fish to truly stand out.

The pineapple beurre blanc was a standout element—silky, slightly sweet, and just a touch tangy. It added a tropical brightness that paired wonderfully with the richness of the salmon. The rice pilaf and sautéed broccolini rounded out the plate, offering texture and balance, making this dish both satisfying and refined.

Creole Trout with Lemon Creole Sauce

The Creole trout brought bold Southern flavors to the table with finesse. The skin was perfectly crisp, providing a satisfying contrast to the tender, delicate fish beneath. Each bite delivered a clean, fresh flavor that was elevated by the thoughtful preparation.

The dirty rice added depth and a savory richness, while the broccolini contributed a fresh, slightly bitter contrast. Dessert
Flourless Chocolate Torte with Raspberry Coulis

To finish, the flourless chocolate torte was nothing short of indulgent. Rich, dense, and deeply chocolatey, it had a luxurious texture that felt almost velvety. Each bite was intensely satisfying without being overly heavy.

The raspberry coulis added a vibrant tartness that cut through the richness of the chocolate, creating a perfect balance of flavors. The whipped cream brought a light, airy element that softened each bite, making this dessert the ideal ending to an exceptional meal.
