People dine in a vibrant restaurant with colorful murals featuring skulls, flowers, and a boombox. Large windows add natural light.

We made our way to Bad Happy Burritos today for lunch, and let’s just say — Hurricane just got a whole lot happier. Located right on Teays Valley Road, this newly opened spot is bright, bold, and bursting with personality from the moment you walk through the door.

Wooden shelf displaying various hot sauce bottles, including Cholula and Valentina, with vibrant labels and different colored caps.

The first thing that grabs you is the wall-to-wall artwork. The space is covered in vibrant murals filled with electric blues, fiery oranges, playful graphics, and larger-than-life imagery that make the entire dining room feel like an art installation. One wall features a stunning sugar-skull-inspired mural, while another showcases retro-inspired graphics and layered patterns. The colors pop against the clean, modern finishes and open layout, creating an atmosphere that feels energetic but still welcoming. Large windows let natural light pour in, and the open dining room buzzes with conversation. The music was on point, too — upbeat, fun, and perfectly matched to the vibe. It’s the kind of place where you want to hang out awhile.

Chef demonstrating cooking at an outdoor market, surrounded by audience. Fresh produce displayed. Warm, lively atmosphere with string lights.

Behind this exciting new concept is none other than Paul Smith, our very own local James Beard Award-winning chef. Chef Paul is also the owner and creative force behind 1010 Bridge and Paulie’s Fine Italian in Charleston — both of which are absolutely exceptional. To see a chef of his caliber bringing something this fun and approachable to Hurricane is truly exciting. You can taste the quality and intention in every bite.

Now let’s talk about what we ordered — because we ordered a lot. And we’re not mad about it.

Street Tacos

Crazy Happy Taco

This taco lives up to its name. Loaded with chicken, cheese, Happy Slaw, Crazy Corn, and finished with chipotle crema and fresh cilantro, it balances creamy, crunchy, smoky, and fresh in every bite. The slaw adds brightness, the corn gives sweetness, and the crema ties it all together beautifully. It’s layered, flavorful, and anything but basic.

Shrimp Shady

Shrimp lovers, this one is for you. Perfectly cooked shrimp paired with cheese, Happy Slaw, pico, and charred poblano ranch creates a taco that’s both light and indulgent. The char on the poblano ranch adds a subtle smokiness that complements the sweetness of the shrimp. It’s fresh, vibrant, and incredibly satisfying.

Fun Dip

This one might be the most playful of the trio. Featuring braised beef, birria-style juices, cheese, and served with a rich dipping sauce, it’s griddled and packed with flavor. Dipping each bite into that savory broth takes it over the top. It’s messy in the best possible way — and completely worth it.

De La Burrito Bowl

Grilled plantains drizzled with creamy sauce over rice and beans in a foil tray, garnished with cilantro.

The De La Burrito Bowl is hearty and comforting without feeling heavy. With gringo beef, rice, Good@$s beans, queso, plantains, and cilantro lime crema, it’s a bowl that brings bold flavor combinations together seamlessly. The sweetness of the plantains against the savory beef and creamy queso creates a perfect contrast. It’s filling, flavorful, and beautifully balanced.

Quesadillas

Mama Tried

Braised beef, cheese, habanero hot honey, charred poblano ranch, and jalapeños come together in this bold quesadilla. The habanero hot honey adds a sweet heat that builds slowly, while the beef is tender and rich. It’s crispy on the outside, gooey in the center, and packed with personality.

In Queso Emergency

Carnitas, cheese (and extra cheese), chipotle crema — happy style. This quesadilla is indulgent in the best way. The carnitas are juicy and flavorful, and the extra layer of melted cheese makes every bite stretch perfectly. The chipotle crema adds just enough smoky heat to keep things interesting.

Sinnamon Churros

We couldn’t leave without dessert. The Sinnamon Churros are warm, crispy on the outside, soft inside, and coated in cinnamon sugar. Served with caramel sauce, they’re sweet, nostalgic, and the perfect ending to a flavor-packed lunch. Simple, classic, and absolutely delicious.

We are so thankful to have Bad Happy Burritos here in Hurricane. The space is clean, open, colorful, and welcoming. The staff was friendly and polite, the service was smooth, and every dish we tried was fresh and flavorful. It’s clear that thoughtful ingredients and creativity are at the heart of this concept.
