Italian Sausage
Italian sausage adds a bold, savory depth that takes this baked ziti to the next level. Seasoned with herbs and spices like fennel, garlic, and paprika, it brings a slightly spicy, aromatic flavor that pairs beautifully with the richness of the tomato sauce. When combined with ground beef, it creates a well-rounded, hearty base that gives the dish its signature comfort food appeal.

Ricotta Cheese
Ricotta cheese is what gives baked ziti its signature creamy texture. Made from whey, ricotta has a light, slightly sweet flavor that balances the richness of the meat sauce and mozzarella. When mixed with egg, herbs, and other cheeses, it creates a luscious, almost custard-like layer that melts into the pasta as it bakes.

Recipe's Origin
Baked ziti is a beloved Italian-American classic, often found at family gatherings, holiday dinners, and potlucks. While traditional Italian pasta dishes vary by region, baked pasta casseroles like this became especially popular in the United States for their simplicity, affordability, and ability to feed a crowd.

This version leans into that tradition while enhancing it with a rich combination of meats and cheeses. It’s inspired by the comforting, oven-baked dishes that have been passed down through generations—simple ingredients, layered thoughtfully, and baked until perfectly golden and bubbling.

Tips, Serving Suggestions, or Storage Advice

Drain excess grease from the meat, but leave a small amount for added flavor.
Let the sauce simmer long enough to develop a rich, deep flavor.
Allow the reserved sauce to cool slightly before mixing to prevent the cheese from melting too early.
Do not overmix the ricotta mixture to maintain a creamy texture.
Use freshly shredded mozzarella for better melting and texture.
Let the baked ziti rest for a few minutes before serving to help it set.
Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness.

The Best Baked Ziti

Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound Italian sausage
1 pound ground beef
1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes (with juice)
1 (14.5-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (14.5-ounce) can petite diced tomatoes
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided (or to taste)
1 teaspoon black pepper, divided (or to taste)
16 ounces ziti or mostaccioli, cooked just under al dente
15 ounces whole milk ricotta cheese
1 1/2 pounds mozzarella cheese, shredded and divided
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 egg
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (plus more for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
Add Italian sausage and ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease, leaving a small amount for flavor.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Simmer for 25–30 minutes.
Remove 3–4 cups of the sauce and set aside to cool slightly.
In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 2 cups of shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Drain the pasta and rinse briefly under cool water to stop the cooking. Add pasta to the ricotta mixture and toss lightly, keeping some pockets of cheese intact.
Add the cooled meat sauce to the pasta mixture and stir to combine.
Spread half of the pasta mixture into a large baking dish. Top with half of the reserved sauce and half of the remaining mozzarella cheese.
Repeat with the remaining pasta, sauce, and mozzarella.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until hot, bubbly, and lightly golden on top.
Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve.
